Travis Barker plays one of the most creative beats of his career on "Adam's Song," which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Modern Rock charts. Each verse has the same basic beat, but this particular transcription is for the first verse.
Let's start by breaking this groove into pieces. The first measure starts with the kick and China cymbal playing on the downbeat and on the "&" of beat 1. The snare is played on beats 2 and 4. Travis adds a hit on the bell of the ride cymbal on the "&" of beat 2, immediately followed by an open hi-hat that rings out for a full count on beat 3. The kick, snare, and floor tom are all hit simultaneously on beat 4, followed by floor tom hits on the last two sixteenth-note triplets of beat 4.
Travis plays riding eight notes on the floor tom through the first three counts of the second measure. The snare is still played on beats 2 and 4 like the previous measure, and the kick is played on beat 1 and on the "&" of beat 1. The measure ends with a short sixteenth-note tom fill with a high tom played on the "e" of beat 4, and the floor tom played on the "&" and on the "ah" of beat 4.
The third measure is basically a repeat of the first measure, with a floor tom in place of the China cymbal, so let's skip ahead to the fourth measure of the groove. Again, snare hits are played on beats 2 and 4, the kick is played on beat 1 and the "&" of beat 1, and the eighth note riding continues on the floor tom through beat 3. On the "&" of beat 3, Travis strikes a splash cymbal.
